JORJA SMITH BLUE LIGHTS

Seemingly out of left field, the UK just acquired its own version of Lauryn Hill without anyone seeing it coming - or at least that’s how we felt when we heard the raw debut single 'Blue Lights' from unknown Jorja Smith. At just eighteen years old, the current Strabucks worker from the Midlands just blew up Soundcloud with her gritty R&B tale of adolescent loyalty, crime and run-ins with the police. With a sample from Dizzee Rascal’s 'Sirens' sitting square in the middle (and apparently serving as inspiration from the song), the track is a perfect example of how silky soul vocals can sound as strong as steel when given an urban twist. Now relocated to South London, and with her apparent talent for rapping as well as singing, this won’t be the last we hear from Jorja Smith. -SJ
